State of California OFFICE OF THE GOVERNOR May 2024 Building Safety Month California’s continued growth depends on the integrity and safety of the buildings and infrastructure that serve our state. This month, we recognize the building code developers, safety officials, builders, engineers, architects and others in the industry who work to ensure the safe construction and maintenance of buildings throughout the state. In coordination with the state agencies that implement the California Building Standards Code (Title 24, California Code of Regulations), these professionals work year-round to ensure the safety of the buildings where we learn, work, live and play. Importantly, modern building codes protect us from extreme weather hazards such as storms, wildland fires, floods and earthquakes. The focus of Building Safety Month this year is building safety on a personal, local and global scale, raising awareness of its essential role in our collective resilience and prosperity. I encourage all Californians to reflect on the vital work of code developers and enforcement officials to protect lives and property in everyday life as well as when disaster strikes. Sincerely, Gavin Newsom
